The Characters
Rhys: Mage, Senior Enchanter
An admirable mage that previously studied spirits and demons before his research was dismissed by the Templars. It was around this time that he met a being called Cole and befriended him. Eventually, he would be falsely accused for the murders of his fellow mages in the Circle. This directly involved him in the growing tensions between mages and templars. Throughout the book, he struggles to find peaceful yet ineffective ways to deal with his oppression as well as staying alive in a time of war.
He’s also good friends with Adrian and his mother is Wynne. He also develops an unlikely, positive relationship with Evangeline.
Adrian: Mage, Senior Enchanter
Rhys’s impulsive friend who goes to the extremes to fight for what she believes. Unfortunately, even if it’s at the cost of innocent lives. She also has a distrust for anyone who disagrees with her and is generally closed-minded, despite her efforts to promote freedom. Adrian is not afraid to say what’s on her mind, but it’s rarely anything good.
Wynne: Mage, Hero of the Blight
An elderly woman who helped in the quest that saved the continent from another Blight, which only brings death and destruction after an Old God, who are believed to be powerful creatures imprisoned underground, has been tainted. She was kept alive for years by a benevolent spirit, a controversial topic few know about. Wynne is also a peaceful woman who wanted to prevent a rebellion at all costs, however ultimately failed by the end of the book.
Evangeline de Brassard: Templar, Knight-Captain
A brave and courageous Templar who finds her fate intertwined with the mages. She takes her duties seriously and fought to get where she is, as the life of a noblewoman didn’t suit her. However, she is not without compassion. After spending more time with the mages and experiencing her own mistreatments from her superiors, she sympathized with them. Later, she would put her morals before her orders and fight alongside her unlikely friends.
Cole: Unknown
A young man with no vivid memories of his past. He only knows he woke up in the lowest dungeons of the Circle’s tower and has similar properties to a ghost. No one could see him, and if they did, they’d almost immediately forget. Only Rhys could see and remember him. It was revealed early in the book Cole was responsible for the killings. Only those who wanted to die could see him, so he embraced the opportunity to escape his loneliness. However, he’s portrayed as a “lost child” in the book, despite the deaths he caused. He doesn’t even care about the mage/templar conflicts. His only goal was to protect Rhys, but he did more harm than good in the end. It’s hinted the sad and confused man is even a demon or spirit and his existence is questionable.
Shale: Dwarven Golem
Centuries ago, a female dwarf had her soul bounded to a golem. The dwarves used to do this and use the stone giants as workers and soldiers, but the practice is now considered taboo. About a decade prior to the book, Wynne met Shale through the Blight and they became good friends. Shale is also the only known golem that has the ability to speak and Wynne was hoping to learn more about her friend’s condition, but the search was sidetracked by the political conflicts in the book.
